Go Far East Tour 2004

Cambodia

I was not prepared for travelling through Cambodia. For reducing any possible risk, I decided to book a flight from Bangkok to Pnom Phen, taking a speed boat from Pnom Phen to Siem Reap and flying back from there to Bangkok. Expecting some problems I though, 5 days should be enough, what a mistake !!

The flight ticket was around 200€, the visa you can get at the airport for 20USD. Don´t forget to take at least one photo with you. Entering Cambodia is extremely easy and fast, it took only about 20 minutes to get the visa and less than 2 minutes for a quick check at customs.

To get from the airport to the center of Pnom Penh you can take a taxi for 7USD, if you are little bit more adventurous just go to the main road and take a small motorbike taxi for 2USD.

The speed boat form Pnom Penh to Siem Reap takes about 5 hours and will cost you 22 - 25USD, tickets are sold at most of the backpackers. Also there is a bus going for only 3USD that takes about 6 hours. Talking to other travellers, I am not sure, wheather the speed boat is really worth the 25 bucks.

Cambodian people, as long as they are not in tourism, are very friendly people, laughing a  lot and it´s real fun travelling in cambodia. But guesthouse owners, taxidrivers and tour operators and all the young girl, selling souvenirs, all want your best means your money. sometimes it´s a real rip off, especially the 25USD air port tax at Siem Reap airport.
